Analysis: Alajbegović Demands a Bigger Role , Muani Finds Hit Scoring Touch - What the Numbers Reveal from Cagliari

Juventus returned from Sardinia with a point and the feeling that they could have achieved more. The 1–1 draw against Cagliari left questions about finishing, but also provided several encouraging signs: Kerim Alajbegović brought creativity off the bench, Randal Kolo Muani ended his Serie A goal drought, and Pape Matar Sarr was one of the main pillars of the team’s build-up play.

The three players contributed in different ways. Alajbegović created chances, Muani converted one into an equaliser, while Sarr’s high number of touches and accurate passes helped Juventus maintain pressure. However, the final score serves as a reminder that strong individual performances must also translate into results.

Alajbegović Changed the Attack: An Assist and Two Big Chances in One Half

Kerim Alajbegović’s introduction at the start of the second half gave Juventus another attacking option. The young Bosnia and Herzegovina international replaced Weston McKennie and, in the 81st minute, delivered a precise cross that found Kolo Muani for the equaliser.

The assist was his most important contribution, but the statistics show that he offered much more than a single decisive pass. In just one half, he created two big chances and recorded four key passes, while maintaining a very high passing accuracy.

Alajbegović vs. Cagliari:

  • One assist.

  • 0.87 expected assists (xA).

  • Two big chances created.

  • Four key passes.

  • Two accurate crosses from five attempts.

  • 27 accurate passes from 28 attempts (96%).

  • One defensive action.

  • One successful duel from one attempt (100%).

  • One ball recovered.

His 0.87 expected assists stands out in particular. This metric estimates the likelihood that chances created by a player’s passes will result in goals. Combined with two big chances created and four key passes, it highlights a performance in which Alajbegović consistently found solutions near the opposition’s goal.

His composure in possession was equally important. With only one inaccurate pass, he demonstrated that creativity does not necessarily come at the cost of frequent turnovers. Against a defence that worked to close down space, he managed to retain possession and recognise the right moment to deliver the final pass.

A Performance That Raises a Question: Does Alajbegović Deserve More Minutes?

One match is not enough to reach a definitive conclusion about his place in the starting XI, but his performance in Cagliari provides a strong argument for increased playing time.

Alajbegović came on while Juventus were chasing the game and immediately took on part of the responsibility for creating chances. His contribution was tangible: opportunities for teammates, an accurate cross and an assist that prevented defeat.

For Luciano Spalletti, it is particularly significant that the youngster showed composure in a match where time was running out. He did not need a large number of touches to influence the final third. The next challenge will be consistency. If he continues to produce performances like this, the question of his playing time will naturally become increasingly important.

Muani Finally Gets Going: First Serie A Goal and a Missed Chance to Complete the Comeback

Randal Kolo Muani scored his first Serie A goal of the season against Cagliari, ending a run of five previous league appearances without scoring.

The Frenchman had already scored against NEC in the Europa League, but he had been waiting for his first goal in the domestic league. His strike in Sardinia could therefore prove important for his confidence and the remainder of the season.

For the equaliser, he displayed the qualities Juventus expect from their striker: well-timed movement, a good reading of the ball’s trajectory and a precise header. He converted Alajbegović’s cross into a goal that gave the visitors hope of completing a comeback.

However, just a few minutes later, there was also a major reason for frustration. Muani struck the crossbar from close range, and Nick Woltemade failed to convert the rebound. The opportunity to secure all three points was wasted.

His performance therefore had two sides: a goal that could get the striker firing again and a missed chance that highlighted Juventus’ finishing problems. The club got an important goal from its centre-forward, but now needs a consistent run of performances from him.

Sarr’s 150 Touches: The Midfielder Who Helped Drive Juventus’ Game

While Alajbegović and Muani attracted attention for their role in the equaliser, Pape Matar Sarr played a different but equally important role.

The Senegalese midfielder completed all 90 minutes and recorded 150 touches of the ball. This figure illustrates how frequently he was involved in Juventus’ play and how often his teammates relied on him as a passing option. Even more impressive was his passing record: 134 accurate passes from 138 attempts, representing 97% accuracy.

Sarr vs. Cagliari:

  • 90 minutes played.

  • 150 touches.

  • 134 accurate passes from 138 attempts (97%).

  • Three key passes.

  • Two shots.

  • One successful dribble from one attempt (100%).

  • Three defensive actions.

  • Three successful duels from three attempts (100%).

  • Six balls recovered.

Sarr was consistently available to receive the ball and helped Juventus connect its different lines. Alongside his three key passes, his contribution included chance creation, while six recoveries point to his activity when possession shifted to the opposition.

His perfect record in three recorded duels further rounded off his performance, although the sample size was small. In each of those situations, he managed to come out on top.

Accuracy Is Not Enough: What Do Sarr’s Numbers Tell Us – and What Do They Leave Out?

A high passing accuracy is valuable, but it does not, on its own, reveal how difficult each pass was, how many opposition players it eliminated from the play or how much it advanced Juventus towards goal.

Sarr’s performance should therefore be assessed through several indicators.

His 150 touches and 134 accurate passes demonstrate his involvement and

reliability, while his three key passes highlight his direct contribution to attacking play.

In a match where Juventus spent long periods trying to break down Cagliari’s defence, a midfielder like Sarr helps maintain pressure and restart attacks. However, a high volume of passing only reaches its full value when possession leads to quality chances and those chances are converted. Sarr provided the foundation for controlling the game. The finishing needed to be better.

Creativity, Goals and Control: Spalletti Has a Foundation, but Juventus Need Wins

The draw in Cagliari offered three different reasons for optimism. Alajbegović showed that he can change the course of a match, Muani found the net in the league, and Sarr provided security and continuity in midfield.

At the same time, the match exposed what Juventus still lack. Created chances and control of possession must translate into goals more consistently, especially when there is an opportunity to claim all three points late in a game.

For Alajbegović, this is an argument for a bigger role. For Muani, it is an opportunity to start a scoring run. For Sarr, it is confirmation that he can be an important pillar in the team’s build-up play.

Spalletti’s task is to turn these individual contributions into a more effective collective performance.

In Sardinia, they produced an equaliser. In the matches ahead, Juventus will expect them to produce victories as well.
