CAGLIARI 1-1 JUVENTUS: KOLO MUANI RESCUES A POINT, BUT THE CROSSBAR DENIES A COMEBACK
Juventus drew 1-1 with Cagliari at the Unipol Domus in the sixth round of Serie A. Daniel Maldini put the hosts ahead in the 20th minute, while Randal Kolo Muani equalised in the 81st minute following an assist from Kerim Alajbegović.
The French striker then struck the crossbar, leaving the Bianconeri agonisingly close to completing a comeback. After the final whistle, tensions flared near the dugouts, resulting in red cards for both Luciano Spalletti and Fabio Pisacane.
NICO MISSES THE CHANCE, MALDINI PUNISHES JUVENTUS
Juventus had a golden opportunity in the 15th minute. Weston McKennie delivered a cross from the right, and Nico González attempted to redirect the ball towards goal. However, his effort went narrowly wide of the post.
Five minutes later, Cagliari took the lead. After Juventus lost possession, the hosts launched an attack. Maldini collected the loose ball, exchanged passes with Mendy and then beat Vicario to put Cagliari ahead. The hosts had secured the kind of result they wanted, while Juventus were forced to find openings against a deep defensive block.
JUVENTUS SEARCH FOR A WAY THROUGH AS CAGLIARI THREATEN ON THE COUNTER
The Bianconeri tried to respond but struggled to create clear-cut chances. Cagliari also threatened through Harry Winks, whose long-range effort was turned behind for a corner by Vicario.
Before half-time, Nico González tried his luck from the edge of the penalty area, but Juventus still could not find an equaliser. The visitors went into the break trailing and needing to increase the tempo and improve their finishing in the second half.
SPALLETTI CHANGES THE ATTACK, ZHEGROVA TESTS CAPRILE
Spalletti made two changes at half-time, introducing Edon Zhegrova and Kerim Alajbegović in place of McKennie and Francisco Conceição. Zhegrova threatened seriously in the 52nd and 64th minutes, but Elia Caprile saved both attempts. Juventus subsequently introduced further attacking options, with Nick Woltemade replacing Nico González and Andrea Cambiaso coming on for Zeki Çelik.
ALAJBEGOVIĆ SETS UP KOLO MUANI FOR THE EQUALISER
Juventus finally found their goal in the 81st minute. Alajbegović delivered the ball towards the far post, where Kolo Muani finished from close range to beat Caprile.
The French striker scored his first goal of the league campaign, bringing the Bianconeri back into the contest and giving them renewed hope of completing the comeback.
THE CROSSBAR DENIES JUVENTUS A COMEBACK
Just a few minutes later, the same combination nearly produced a winner. Alajbegović once again picked out Kolo Muani, but the striker’s effort in the 85th minute struck the crossbar. Juventus came agonisingly close to turning the game around completely, but ultimately had to settle for a single point.
POST-MATCH CLASH: BOTH MANAGERS SEE RED
The match ended in dramatic fashion. Following the final whistle, a confrontation broke out near the dugouts, leading to the dismissal of both Spalletti and Pisacane.
Both managers were shown red cards. The precise reasons for the dismissals, as well as any potential further sanctions, will have to await the official disciplinary ruling.
A POINT THAT LEAVES JUVENTUS WANTING MORE
Juventus managed to recover from going behind, but the closing stages left the visitors feeling that they had missed an opportunity to claim all three points.
Kolo Muani’s goal secured the equaliser, while the crossbar prevented his side’s comeback from turning into a victory.
The Bianconeri leave Sardinia with a point and an important goal from their striker, but they will also need to find ways to turn their pressure into goals more consistently.
